The Homeschool Mother's Journal: Week Two

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week...

As I complained mentioned this past week, we were cooped up in the house for almost a week straight because of the ice/snow storm. Consequently everyone's tempers were a little shorter and the children got pretty stir-crazy. We were finally able to get out last night for a much needed dinner out with the family and trip to the store. Hopefully this week the weather is a little less crazy.

In our homeschool this week...

We're still focusing a lot on reading and writing. Zeke enjoys handwriting when I tell him how to spell family member's names or things he likes - Star Wars characters, games he likes, animals, etc.

Places we're going and people we're seeing...

This past week we obviously went nowhere! This week we don't have a whole lot planned either, possibly a play group, maybe some babysitting...that's about it. Well, and of course a trip to the library at some point in time. We are going to be taking some field trips later on towards the end of this month and I'm considering having a Valentine's party on Valentine's Day.

My favorite thing this week was...

Zeke asking to "do school" at 10 PM on Friday night! Who am I to refuse? We happily worked on writing, reading and crafts for an hour or two before heading to bed. One of the definite advantages of homeschooling - schooling whenever you want! (It's not like we had anywhere to go the next morning anyway!)

What's working/not working for us...

Working on themes based on books or other things that Zeke likes seems to really work for us. He seems to really enjoy it. For instance, one day this past week I said, "It's Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Day!" We read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and Chicka Chicka 1-2-3 and did a bunch of activities that go with that - do a dot coconut tree papers, drew our own idea pictures of a Chicka Chicka Boom Boom tree with all the letters/numbers in it, watched/listened to both of the stories on DVD and made our own CCBB tree.

Homeschool questions/thoughts I have...

Has anyone used either Heart of Dakota or Christian Light Education homeschool curriculum? I've looked over curriculum a LOT this past week and I think I've decided what we'll be using for first grade. (I'll write more about that later, though.) Anyway, I'd love to hear from anybody who's actually used them (Heart of Dakota or CLE) and their experiences.

A photo, video, link, or quote to share...

Zeke has a silly look on his face but he wanted to show off his new union suit - it's just like Daddy's! And of course, Ellie had to be in on the picture too.
