Addison Academy: Week One

  • In my life this week…
We started up a brand new year of school – but more on that in the next bracket. We’re still in the midst of home renovations but things are slowly coming along. We should be able to paint & do flooring soon – and then we’ll be back in our bedrooms! Yay! Hubby has been working a bunch (booo) but is getting a bit of a break this weekend and will hopefully be on a more normal schedule this coming week.
  • In our homeschool this week…
It was our first week “back to school.” Overall everything went very well. Zeke has been working enthusiastically on his schoolwork – even doing extra than what I’ve assigned, or requesting to work on a workbook before bed. Below is just a little collage of some of the things the kids worked on during the first day – sight word practice page, sight word cards, and calendar notebooks. They are really enjoying the calendar notebooks so they can daily keep track of the weather, date, days of school, etc. We’ve been learning about gardens in Science, which works out well since our garden is currently flourishing! And Zeke is really just flying through his Math. It also cracks me up that every subject is his “favorite.” I’ll say, “Ok, time for Math” and he’ll say, “Oh, my favorite!” Same goes for History, Reading, Science….LOL.

  • Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…
Letting the kids know in advance what all is expected for the day is really helping out in the “how much do we have left to do” department. Last year Zeke was constantly saying, “Are we done? Is that the last page?” Not because he hated it but because he is a planner (big time!) and likes to know what is going to happen next. Now he has a checklist or I write everything out on our big whiteboard so he can visually see how much schoolwork is left, what chores need done, etc.
  • Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…
Our homeschool group has been having a Park Day each week throughout the summer for the kids to play together & for the moms to chat – so we did that on Thursday. This coming week, a few of the other moms & I will be getting together to make a tentative plan of the different things we’re wanting to do with the group this year.
  • My favorite thing this week was…
At our weekly park day with our homeschool group, it started pouring down rain…and I do mean POURING! It was too late to try and load everyone up in the vehicles without getting soaked so we all agreed to just let them play – and you would have thought we told them they could go to Disneyworld! They had such a fun time – jumping in puddles, splashing, and just generally running around being crazy!

  • My kiddos favorite thing this week was…
I’m going to guess probably the same thing!
  • Things I’m working on…
Trying to manage Ellie during school. I figured I would have to make some adjustments having Zac now (the baby) but she’s actually proven to be more of a challenge than him! She’s been excited about homeschool preschool but when we really starting doing stuff this week she wouldn’t do hardly anything by herself and kept distracting Zeke…a LOT. So I’ve got to reevaluate some this weekend and see how I might be able to work on that.
  • I’m praying for…
Sweet friends who are nearing the end of their pregnancies. One of them has already had her bundle of joy (and everything went oh so smoothly!) but two others are still waiting. I know they are busy planning & preparing but want to keep them in my thoughts for rest, reassurance, and God’s perfect timing.
  • Something I am ogling or have my eye on…
This is totally not a big deal…but I saw an item on another homeschooling blog the other day that intrigued me – lap desks. I found some on Amazon but am debating whether we really need them or not. On the one hand, they’re not too expensive and would be great for working on the couch. But on the other hand, we don’t necessarily *NEED* them and we have a dining room table that works just fine. Decisions, decisions…
  • A photo, video, link, or quote to share (silly, serious or both!)…
