Day 4: Babies

Today is Day 4 of my "5 Days of Birth and Babies" as part of the Review Crew's "5 Days Of..." Blog Hop. My topic today is....babies! Ah, babies...those sweet little bundles of joy that smell like heaven. Well, until their first diaper anyway. Oh yeah, and then they start squealing, screaming, and crying. And pooping more. And spitting up. Hmmm...

Tips & Tricks to Survive the First Few Weeks

- Support: Having support is key when you're first starting out as a mother! There are so many things that come up that you may never have encountered before. Enlist help from family, friends, support groups, friends who are mothers, church friends/family, or whoever you know will support your decisions and help to guide you if you encounter questions. Let them know specifically what you need such as childcare, breastfeeding support, food, baby sleeping advice, a little break, etc. (And it should go without saying that I don't mean to just demand things from people...ask people who are willing to help, thank them and return the favor!)
- Sleep: I don't know about you but I don't do well when I don't get enough rest. I think most people are the same way. So of course this makes having a new baby difficult as their sleep schedules can be much different than ours. People are quick to say "sleep when the baby sleeps." "Uh, then when am I supposed to do other things?!" is my response to that. And when you have more kids? Pretty much impossible. Just try to get as much REST as you can - even if you can't sleep, resting on the couch or relaxing in an easy chair works too. Other things may fall by the wayside and that is okay. (Let me repeat - that is okay.) Also please see my next point...
- Visitors: There are always people wanting to come see your new baby or visit with you - they also often say, "If there's anything I can do to help, just let me know!" My suggestion? Do it! Enlist their help. Ask them to hold the baby while you jump in the shower, take a quick nap, or get a bite to eat. Let them know how much you appreciate their help and that they are making your life so much better.
- Enjoy: Don't be afraid to say "no" when people ask you to take something on or invite you to something. Your baby is only going to be little for a short time (although it seems to drag on and on during those sleepless nights)
