Top Ten Ways To Relax

The world is pretty crazy right now. With families all over the country being confined to their homes, out of school or work, having to work from home, or limited to the activities they can do, there's a lot of uncertainty - and with that comes anxiousness, frustration, and boredom. To try and help a little bit, I'm going to be posting a Top Ten List each day for the next five days with things for families to do, ways to relax, or other helpful tips.

Today's post is all about ways to relax! I know you may be limited in certain respects depending on where you live, whether you're still having to go to work, and/or if you have kids taking up a lot of your time. However, please remember that YOU are important and that you need to take care of yourself, especially during stressful times. Try to carve out a little time each day to do something that relaxes you - even if it's just a few minutes at a time - maybe after the kids are in bed, before they get up for the day, or when your spouse/partner can watch them. If you have any other ideas, please leave them in the comments!

10. Physical/Outdoors - Try a change of scenery. Go for a walk/jog/hike or a short trip in the car if you're able to. Or try some new exercises: there are lots of streaming programs online, do some stretching/yoga, or do some yard work - weather permitting.

9. Entertainment - Find a funny show or movie to or binge a new series. Read a good book or magazine. Search for something that interests you on YouTube or pull out a board or card game.

8. Personal Care - Relax in the bath or soak your feet. Paint or trim your nails, play with makeup, or try some new hair styles/updos/braids. (But please don't cut or dye your hair yourself unless you're actually qualified to...you don't want to do something you're going to regret while you're stuck inside!) Use a facial mask or do a deep conditioning treatment on your hair.

7. Mental Health - Take a break from social media - it can be very helpful but also incredibly overwhelming. Schedule downtime from your phone or the computer. Try meditation, deep breathing, lighting a candle, praying, or writing/using a journal for your thoughts.

6. Cleaning - Tackle a task you’ve been putting off or declutter something that’s been accumulating. Rearrange your furniture (carefully!) or reorganize something like books, closets, or clothes. Take some time to disinfect surfaces and frequently touched objects like door knobs, light switches, cabinet handles, etc.

5. Art - It doesn't matter if you're an artist or an amateur, as long as you find it relaxing. Grab some coloring books and color, or just some paper and doodle. Or maybe painting, drawing, knitting, sewing, or crocheting is more your style. Browse the web for arts and crafts ideas. (Or check my post from earlier this week!)

4. Music - Listen to some soothing music or crank up some tunes and start belting. Step out of your comfort zone and listen to something totally different. Watch a musical/opera. Check out a livestream or virtual concert - many artists are offering them currently. If you play an instrument, pick it up and do some practicing.

3. Food – Try a new recipe or bake something from scratch. Ever thought about making your own episode of “Chopped” - where everybody has to make something with mystery ingredients? Why not try it now? Or if you're still able to, order something for delivery or carry out to support your local restaurants.

2. Learning - Brush up on something you've been neglecting or dive into learning a new hobby or language. See if your local library has online resources/ebooks to learn about different topics.

1. Connect - Take a little bit of time to do something special with your spouse/partner - curl up with a movie, listen to music together, cook something together, or do something else you enjoy. Call, text, email, or video chat with friends and family members - check in with them and see how they're doing.
